I'm not sure in which story it first appeared(Wikipedia tells me its " The Hound"), the Necronomicon has that unmistakable effect of detailing such unspeakable acts of ritual that it is often referred to simply as that, "unspeakable" leaving the reader in the story absolutely horrified and revulsed. What's "modern"? In this interview Moore describes it as doing away with the 1930s setting where almost all of Lovecrat's stories were set, and introducing naturalism as successfully as some TV programmes have managed to - although I tend to see it as a take on the whole Lovecraft genre that, while perhaps not intentional, makes a bold statement amidst the hordes of pastiches set in and around the Cthulhu Mythos, written or otherwise.īoth books have so far been reasonably steeped in Lovecraft references that it does the casual reader a disservice to not at the very least be familiar with some of the original authur's writing. It should be obvious by now to most that the key to Neonomicon, as far as the first two issues are concerned, is in the series title itself, that is, an attempt to bring HP Lovecraft's accursed and fictional tome of uglies, the Necronomicon, into a more modern setting (re: NEO).

With issue #3 released some time last month(Happy New Year!) and still waiting for my copy to arrive I thought to put some thoughts down about the series thus far, in particular issue #2.
